DANBY SCHOLARSHIP
In the late 1990's and early 2000's, Dr. J.M.A. "Tony" Danby, a mathematics professor at NC State, served as the Faculty Advisor for Phi Delta Theta. Although not a Phi, Tony knew many of the Founders and members of early pledge classes from having them as students. He was impressed with the caliber of these men and readily accepted the opportunity to advise the Chapter. Tony was a regular attender of Chapter meetings and events, and was deeply involved with the Phikeia Education (Pledge) Program each semester. Tony eventually was initiated as a Brother.
In 1999, Tony established an endowed Scholarship Fund for the benefit of members of our Chapter whose financial challenges threatened their active participation. His initial gift of $25,000 has grown to a market value of $62,386 as of December 31, 2008 (even while distributing $13,325 in scholarships to 25 individuals). Part of the Fund's growth is due to additional contributions (from Tony and other alumni), whose gifts to the national Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation have been designated for the Danby Fund (the national foundation manages the endowment, but the North Carolina Delta Foundation administers the scholarship process).
For Alumni
When you receive general solicitations from the national Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation, you may designate in the Memo of your check "Tony Danby Scholarship Fund" and your full gift will be added to that Fund. You may also contribute online - note that when filling out the online donation form, you will be given the opportunity to select a specific Fund to which your gift should be credited...select the "North Carolina Delta - Tony Danby Fund." And - your gift still counts in full toward your Educational Foundation contribution record.
For Brothers
Applications are accepted each Spring for the following academic year. A notice will be sent each Spring to all active brothers announcing the scholarship. Applications are limited to those brothers who are in good standing both with the Chapter and with the University, who demonstrate financial need, and who will be active in the Chapter for the following academic year.
Application period is now closed for the 2009-10 school year
